Kolkata: Maulana Mohammad Shafiq Qasmi, Imam of Kolkata's famous Nakhoda Mosque, has made a special appeal to the Muslims. He said that cow sacrifice should be avoided while respecting Hindu sentiments. Maulana says that to maintain brotherhood in society, we should not do things which hurt anyone's religious sentiments.

What new rules has the West Bengal government made regarding the sacrifice of animals?

The state government has recently issued new guidelines. Now no animal will be sacrificed without a health certificate. According to the rules, the officers will give permission only after checking the age and health of the animal. The aim of the government is to organize the sacrifice and stop the sacrifice of sick animals.

Why did the Imam demand to declare the cow as the national animal?

Maulana Qasmi said that if the government cannot provide proper facilities for slaughter houses and veterinary doctors, then it is better to declare cow as the national animal. He also talked about cow sacrifice and a complete ban on beef export in the entire country. They believe that this will end the recurring disputes.

What advice was given to the Muslims?

The Imam appealed to the Muslim community to sacrifice a goat instead of a cow. He said that by doing this the sentiments of Hindu brothers will not be hurt and harmony will also be maintained in the society. The purpose of the festival is sacrifice, and it is fulfilled even with the help of a goat.

What about loudspeakers?

Maulana also spoke on the use of loudspeakers in mosques. He said that rules regarding noise limit are already made and the Supreme Court has also accepted them. But from some places there are reports of loudspeakers being removed from mosques without proper information. He expressed concern over this.

What appeal did he make to the mosque committees?

The Imam asked the mosque committees to support the administration. Use loudspeakers only within prescribed limits. He explained that only by following the rules, both religious freedom and social balance can be maintained. We should not do anything that causes trouble to other communities.
