National news: Who is Sonam Wangchuk: Ladakh is considered one of the most beautiful regions of India. However, it is currently experiencing political unrest and protests. The people here have been demanding full statehood from the central government for quite some time. This movement is led by Sonam Wangchuk, a renowned engineer and education reformer.
In 2019, the Indian government revoked Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Ladakh was subsequently designated a separate Union Territory. Initially, many in Ladakh were pleased with the revocation of the article. However, over time, they began to feel that without a legislative assembly and special rights, Ladakh's identity, culture, and future were at serious risk.
Meanwhile, many questions are being raised about Sonam Wangchuk. Many people know about him, while others still don't. So, before delving into the ongoing protests, let's first find out who Sonam Wangchuk is.
Sonam Wangchuk is not only an education reformer but also a technological innovator. He built the SECMOL campus, which runs entirely on solar energy and uses no fossil fuels. He also edits Ladakh's local magazine, Ladag's Melong, and has worked with several social organizations.
If you recall, Sonam Wangchuk was the inspiration behind the character Phunsukh Wangdu in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots. Today, Wangchuk, along with many students and youth, is leading the fight for Ladakh's rights.
Protests and strikes broke out in Leh and surrounding areas. Some young protesters even resorted to stone-throwing. Police resorted to tear gas and lathi-charge to quell the protests, leading to a tense situation. The protesters want the government to take their demands seriously and immediately begin negotiations to ensure Ladakh's constitutional rights.
