Leh Protests Turn Violent As Students Demand Full Statehood For Ladakh, CRPF Vehicle Set Ablaze

Leh Protests: The situation in Leh became tense when a large number of students took to the streets and protested against the central government. The protests were in support of renowned environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has long been demanding full statehood for Ladakh. Students have raised their voices on this issue, and the agitation has now escalated. 

Leh resonates with anti-government slogans

The protesters raised slogans against the central government. The students said that since Ladakh was designated a separate Union Territory, the region's identity, culture, and resources are under threat. Only full statehood can protect Ladakh's interests. They warned that if their demands are not met, they will intensify their protests. 

Clashes between police and students

As the crowd grew, the situation spiraled out of control. Clashes broke out between students and security forces, with reports of minor scuffles and stone-throwing. Police attempted to control the situation, but the students' anger remained unabated. Additional police forces were deployed to the scene, and an alert was declared in the entire area. 

CRPF vehicle set on fire

During the protest, student anger erupted when they set a CRPF vehicle on fire. This incident underscored the seriousness of the movement and demonstrated that the protesters were unwilling to back down. Following this arson incident, security agencies have increased their tactics and enforcement to control the situation.

The students argue that while Ladakh's population may be small, political rights are essential to preserve its culture, ecology, and social structure. Only full statehood can provide the region with lasting security and identity. They repeatedly reiterate that this is not just a political demand, but a question of Ladakh's identity.
