New Delhi: A big change can be seen in the politics of the country. There is discussion that the total seats of Lok Sabha can be increased from 543 to more than 800. The biggest reason behind this is said to be giving 33 percent reservation to women.

How much will women benefit?

If this scheme is implemented then the number of women in Parliament will increase significantly. By adding new seats, one-third of them can be reserved for women, making their participation higher than ever before.

Can the new system be implemented from 2029?

According to sources, the effort is to implement this change by the next Lok Sabha elections i.e. 2029. For this, new distribution of seats and many legal processes will have to be completed.

What will be the role of delimitation?

To increase seats, delimitation is necessary, that is, distribution of seats according to population. Earlier it was being linked to the new census, but now there is discussion that the process can be taken forward on the basis of old data also so that there is no delay.

What will be the impact on the states?

An increase in seats means that the number of MPs in the states will also increase. There are chances that larger states may add more seats, while smaller states will see limited growth.

How is this change going to be implemented?

Changes will have to be made in the Constitution, which will need to be passed with an overwhelming majority in the Parliament. That means building political consensus will be the most important part of this entire process.

What are the signs ahead?

At present all this is at the planning and discussion stage, but if the government takes it forward then the electoral map of the country may change in the coming few years. Especially the presence of women in Parliament can reach a new level.  The political debate on this issue may intensify in the coming times. The reactions of the opposition and different states will also play an important role in deciding the direction of this decision.
