Major Blow To TMC: Prakash Chik Baraik Resigns As Rajya Sabha MP; Another Setback For Mamata Banerjee (x)

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) suffered another major blow on Thursday when its Rajya Sabha MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from the Upper House. The development comes as a major blow to former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the resignations of senior leaders Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Sushmita Dev.

When did Prakash Chik Baraik resigned?

TMC's Prakash Chik Baraik on Thursday resigned as the Rajya Sabha MP and is expected to meet Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan to formally tender his resignation.

"Respected Sir, I do hereby resign from the membership of Rajya Sabha, which may please be accepted with immediate effect. I convey my sincere gratitude to your Excellency, Hon'ble Deputy Chairman and all functionaries of Rajya Sabha Secretariat extending all help and cooperation during my tenure as a Member of the Rajya Sabha," he wrote in the resignation letter.

Will TMC strength in Rajya Sabha decline?

With this, the total number of TMC MPs who have resigned from the Upper House in recent days has risen to three. These frequent resignations are directly impacting the party's strength in Parliament. With Baraik's resignation, the number of Trinamool Congress MPs in the Rajya Sabha is likely to drop to 10.

The troubles for the Mamata Banerjee-led party don't seem to end here. At least three more TMC Rajya Sabha MPs are expected to resign within the next week. If this happens, the ongoing crisis within the party could deepen significantly.

Will Prakash Chik Baraik join BJP?

While speaking to reporters after the resignation, Baraik said, "Accepting the opinion given by the people of West Bengal, I have also submitted my resignation today."

Sharing his decision about joining the BJP, he said that, "Time will tell."
