New Delhi: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached Kolkata on Saturday. This is his first official visit to India. During this four-day tour, he will meet many big leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is believed that big issues like trade, defense, energy and Indo-Pacific strategy will be discussed.
This visit is taking place at a time when the friendship between India and America is continuously deepening. Both countries are focusing on countering China in the Indo-Pacific through the Quad group. Apart from this, big talks are also to be held regarding defense deal, technology and trade. America wants India to become its reliable partner.

According to sources, after landing in Kolkata, Rubio may visit Mother Teresa's 'Mother House.' It is the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity. From there he will directly leave for Delhi where he is scheduled to meet PM Modi. The stay in Kolkata may be for a very short time, but this tour says a lot in itself.
Earlier in 2012, Hillary Clinton had come to Kolkata. It is a big thing in itself for an American foreign minister to come here after 14 years. Kolkata has its own historical and political importance. America also keeps an eye on issues from here to East India and Bangladesh.
US Ambassador Sergio Gore said that trade, technology, defense, Quad and energy cooperation will be discussed during this tour. America wants to sell more oil and gas to India. Discussion on new deals is possible in defense also. America is also interested in tech transfer and semiconductors.
Before leaving for India, Rubio clearly said that America is ready to provide as much energy as India needs. America is currently producing energy at record levels. He wants India to reduce its dependence on Russia and buy more oil and gas from America.
There is a Quad meeting on 26th May in which the foreign ministers of India, America, Japan and Australia will sit. In this, security of Indo-Pacific, maritime cooperation, connectivity and increasing assertiveness of China will be discussed. The four countries will together make a strategy to support each other. Overall, this visit of Rubio is not just a meeting but a preparation to take India-America relations to the next level.
