India-US Energy Ties in Focus as Marco Rubio Meets Mukesh Ambani Over Venezuela Oil Prospects (Open AI)

Mumbai: A new possibility seems to be emerging regarding energy cooperation between India and America. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that the US is in talks with Reliance Industries to increase the refining capacity of Venezuelan crude oil. Describing India as a 'refining superpower', he said Washington understands India's energy needs and its strategy to diversify sources of oil imports. Amidst this development, Rubio's visit to Reliance Refinery in Jamnagar is also considered important.

What is America discussing with Reliance regarding Venezuelan oil?

According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US is discussing with Reliance Industries the possibility of refining Venezuelan crude oil in larger quantities. He said that Reliance has the technical capability and experience to process heavy crude oil. The company has already worked in Venezuela and refined oil there.

Rubio indicated that if Venezuela's oil production increases in the future, companies like Reliance could play an important role in processing it. However, he clarified that talks in this regard are still ongoing. At this time, this should not be seen as a final agreement or a finalised business plan.

Why will Marco Rubio meet Mukesh Ambani in Jamnagar?

Marco Rubio, who is visiting India, is going to visit the refinery of Reliance Industries in Jamnagar, Gujarat on Wednesday. Information about change in his programme has also come to light. He may stay overnight in Jamnagar and have dinner with Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani at Vantara Centre.

This visit is important in view of the ongoing discussions regarding Reliance's refining capacity and Venezuelan crude oil. However, no official announcement has been made yet regarding the issues on which final agreement will be reached during the meeting.

Why does Rubio consider India a 'refining superpower'?

Marco Rubio praised India's oil refining capacity and called it a 'refining superpower'. India has the capacity to process crude oil on a large scale and supplies refined petroleum products to its domestic needs as well as to international markets.

Rubio's statement indicates that America considers this capability of India important in terms of energy cooperation. The possibility of increasing role of Indian companies in refining Venezuelan heavy crude oil is also being seen in this context.

What is America's stance on Russian oil?

On the question of India buying crude oil from Russia, Rubio said that New Delhi has long expressed its desire to diversify its energy portfolio. According to him, it is not easy for a country to change the sources of oil supply overnight, but India has made progress in this direction.

America wants it to become a major source of energy supply for India. In such a situation, the possible cooperation with Reliance on Venezuelan oil is being seen in the broader context of energy relations between the two countries.

Will Rubio also meet Gautam Adani and Tata Group chief?

Before the Jamnagar tour or before leaving from Mumbai, Marco Rubio is also proposed to meet other prominent personalities of the industry. These include Gautam Adani of Adani Group and Chairman of Tata Group N. Chandrasekaran.

Detailed official information regarding the agenda of these meetings is yet to be revealed. At present, talks on Venezuelan oil with Reliance and visit to Jamnagar Refinery are in the news regarding the possibilities of energy cooperation between India and America.
