New Delhi: This year the monsoon situation in the country remains weaker than normal. So far in the three months of monsoon, about 14 percent less rainfall than normal has been recorded. Now the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also released the forecast for September, the last month of monsoon. According to the department, there is a possibility of less than normal rainfall across the country in September. However, some areas may receive normal or above normal rainfall.
The average rainfall estimate across the country for September is 167.9 mm. IMD Director General Dr. Mrityunjay Mahapatra told a press conference on Monday that there is a forecast of below-normal rainfall in many parts of the country during September. At the same time, rainfall may be normal or above normal in some areas of the north-west, north-east, east, east-central and south-eastern parts.
According to IMD forecast, rainfall across the country is likely to be below normal in September. However, the distribution of rainfall will not be uniform in all areas. Some states and areas may receive more rainfall than normal, while many parts may remain deficient in rainfall.
The department has also predicted that the monthly average temperature in most parts of the country in September may be above normal.
According to the Meteorological Department, so far during the three months of monsoon there has been 13.8 percent less rainfall than normal. Normally there is 556.2 mm rainfall during this period, whereas this time only 421.6 mm rainfall has been recorded so far.
The maximum rainfall deficiency was in the southern part, where rainfall was 24.2 percent less than normal. At the same time, 25.7 percent rainfall has been recorded in the northeast and less than normal rainfall in northwest India.
According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall data has been collected from 741 districts of the country. Of these, there are 312 districts i.e. about 42 percent, where less than normal rainfall has been recorded. Apart from this, there has been extremely less rainfall in 38 districts.
At the same time, normal rainfall has been recorded in 290 districts. More than normal rainfall was recorded in about 80 districts and excessive rainfall was recorded in 14 districts. Data for seven districts was not available.
Monsoon remained weak in August also. 16.3 percent less rainfall than normal was recorded across the country. According to the Meteorological Department, the normal rainfall in August is 190.7 mm, but this time only 139.1 mm of rain occurred.
If we talk about region-wise data, the rain deficiency in South India was highest at 27.1 per cent. 16.9 cent less rainfall was recorded in Northeast India, 16.2 per percent in Central India and 9.5 cent in Northwest India. In contrast, there was about one per cent more rainfall than normal in July.
According to the Meteorological Department, a total of 213.3 mm rainfall occurred in August. The department has described it as the 17th least rainy August since 1901.
Temperatures are expected to be above normal in September also. In such a situation, increased temperature along with lack of rain can increase problems for farming, water resources and common people.
With lack of rain, the temperature in August was also above normal. According to IMD, the average temperature of August was recorded at 28.01 degrees Celsius, which is 0.67 degrees more than the normal temperature. This is said to be the highest average temperature recorded in August since 1901.
The minimum average temperature was also 0.68 degrees above normal, while an increase of 0.65 degrees was recorded in the maximum average temperature.
