The Congress party has taken swift action against Navjot Kaur Sidhu, suspending her with immediate effect. The decision comes in response to her controversial remark about the Chief Minister’s post being potentially “purchased for 500 crore rupees.” Her statement triggered severe backlash from within the party as well as opposition in Punjab.
A few days ago, Sidhu had made a remark during a conversation that “if someone wants the CM post, and if money were available, one might give Rs 500 crore and make someone CM.” She added that since they had no such money, they were not seeking the post. This casual comment sparked uproar and was widely criticized.

The statement created immediate tension within the Congress. Party leaders felt the remark damaged their image and left them vulnerable to political attacks. Punjab opposition seized the opportunity to target Congress, accusing the party of institutionalised corruption. Under mounting pressure, Congress decided the only way to contain the fallout was to suspend her membership.
Soon after the controversy erupted, Navjot Kaur Sidhu took to social media claiming her words were twisted. She said she never claimed she would pay for power. Her real point was that they had no money to even consider it. She expressed surprise at the distorted portrayal of her statement. But her clarification failed to calm the storm.
The suspension has stirred fresh debate about power politics and money in party politics. Opposition leaders have intensified scrutiny on Congress’s internal functioning. Public interest has spiked — citizens are asking if political posts are genuinely contested or monetised. The embarrassment comes at a time when the party can least afford it.
Congress now faces the dual challenge of damage control and rebuilding trust. They must show they stand for clean politics. Critics argue that suspending one individual isn’t enough unless structural changes follow. For many voters, this episode will remain a reminder of allegations around money and power.
Congress has promised internal investigation. The party may issue further action depending on findings. Political analysts believe Punjab’s upcoming elections will bring this controversy back into focus. Meanwhile Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s political future remains uncertain. The coming days will show whether this suspension was enough — or just the beginning.
