Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati has demanded Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram. The statement from the BSP chief has come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that former PMs Chaudhary Charan Singh and PV Narasimha Rao will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. Along with them, MS Swaminathan, father of the green revolution will also be awarded the country's highest civilian award.

We welcome the recent awarding of Bharat Ratna, but the neglect of Dalit personalities in this regard is not correct...

Taking it to her X handle, Mayawati tweeted, "All the personalities who have been honored with Bharat Ratna by the present BJP government are welcome, but in this matter, it is not appropriate to disrespect and ignore especially the Dalit personalities. The government must pay attention to this also."

"After a long wait, Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar was honored with the title of Bharat Ratna by the government of Shri VP Singh. After that, the struggle done by respected Shri Kanshiram ji, the messiah of the Dalits and the neglected, in their interests is no less. He should also be honored with Bharat Ratna," she added in a string of tweets.

The demand was also raised by BSP head Mayawati last month, following Rashtrapati Bhavan's announcement that prominent socialist politician and former chief minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur, will receive the Bharat Ratna posthumously.
