National News: The Nitish Kumar government has brought festive cheer for state employees and pensioners. Ahead of Diwali and Chhath, the Bihar Cabinet approved a 3% hike in dearness allowance. With this move, DA for employees has now increased from 55% to 58%. This decision comes at a politically crucial time, just before the assembly elections. For employees and pensioners, it is both a festive relief and a financial boost.
The salary hike depends on basic pay. For example, an employee with a basic salary of Rs 60,000 earlier received Rs 33,000 at 55% DA. Now, at 58% DA, the amount rises to Rs 34,800. This means an additional Rs 1,800 will be credited every month. The timely relief is expected to help employees manage festival expenses. Many see it as both a financial cushion and an election-year strategy.
Along with Bihar, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi also approved a DA hike. Central government employees and pensioners will now get 58% DA, effective from July 1. This festive announcement will benefit nearly 48 lakh central employees and 67 lakh pensioners. The Centre’s decision is also being viewed as a step to boost purchasing power. Economists say it will enhance market activity during the festive season.
Not just Bihar and the Centre, Odisha also announced a DA hike. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi approved a 2% increase for PSU employees. Their DA will rise from 53% to 55%, effective from January 1, 2025. This announcement adds to the festive spirit for thousands of state employees. It shows how governments across states are aligning such decisions with festivals.
These DA hikes are more than financial decisions; they carry political weight. Employees and pensioners form a large voter base, and such steps influence public mood. By announcing hikes around Diwali and Chhath, governments link financial relief with festive happiness. Analysts believe the timing strengthens trust among employees. At the same time, it creates a positive atmosphere for upcoming elections.
