Bhubaneswar: In Odisha, a man exhumed his sister's body from her grave and carried it to a bank after the institution refused to allow him to withdraw approximately ₹20,000 from her account. The administration sprang into action after a video of Jeetu Munda walking along the road carrying the skeleton went viral. Following government intervention, the bank released his sister's deposited funds to him on Tuesday. Jeetu's sister, Kalra, had passed away on January 26.
Jeetu Munda stated, "I visited the bank multiple times. I informed them that my sister had died; yet, they repeatedly insisted that I bring her to the bank so that the funds deposited in her name could be withdrawn." Alarmed by the sight of the skeleton, the bank officials immediately alerted the local police. Kiran Prasad Sahoo, the Inspector-in-Charge of the Patna Police Station in Keonjhar district, confirmed that following police intervention, the body was returned to the cemetery and reburied.
The police official remarked, "Jeetu is illiterate. He does not understand the concepts of a legal heir or a nominee. The bank officials were unable to explain to him the proper procedure for withdrawing funds following the death of a relative." Meanwhile, in its official statement, the bank suggested that the incident likely occurred due to a lack of awareness regarding the claim settlement process and the individual's reluctance to comprehend the procedures outlined by the Branch Manager. The bank maintained that its objective was to safeguard the financial interests of poor tribal women—specifically the funds deposited in their accounts—and asserted that there was no intent to harass anyone involved.
