PM Modi Manipur Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state for the first time two years after the violence broke out in Manipur in the year 2023. Despite heavy rains on Saturday, PM Modi reached Churachandpur by road travelling 65 km from Imphal Airport and met the displaced people living in relief camps here. Churachandpur is the same area which is considered to be the center of this violence, where more than 260 people lost their lives in the clashes.

The Prime Minister interacted with the affected elderly and children here and assured them that the central government stands with them. Describing Churachandpur as a "land of courage and determination", he said that the spirit of the people of Manipur has kept hope alive even in difficult circumstances. During this time, Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla was also present with him.

Foundation Stone For Churachandpur Projects

PM Modi laid the foundation stone of 14 major development projects worth Rs 7,300 crore in Churachandpur. These include drainage systems, women's hostels, new schools and super-speciality health facilities. He said, "It was good that my helicopter could not land here and I came by road. On the way, I saw the enthusiasm of people waving the tricolor. I salute the spirit of the people of Manipur... Manipur is the land of heroes."

Violence erupted in Manipur in 2023

The violence started on 3 May 2023 in Churachandpur. Here the Kuki-Jo community had taken out a rally against the demand of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status of the Meitei community of Manipur. After this, the situation worsened and there were frequent clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities. So far, more than 260 people have been killed in this ethnic conflict, hundreds were injured and more than 60,000 people were displaced and forced to take shelter in relief camps.

Manipur Crisis And President’s Rule

The Kuki-Ji groups have long been demanding that the hill districts where their population is in majority be given the status of a separate Union Territory. On the other hand, the Meitei community is in majority in the Imphal valley, which further deepened the tension between the two sides. Amidst the continuous violence and unstable situation, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned. After this, President's rule has been imposed in Manipur since 13 February 2025. The central government is now giving priority to peace restoration and development work.

PM Modi's next stop is Imphal

Prime Minister Modi will now go to Meitei-dominated Imphal, where he will meet people living in relief camps there. In Imphal, he will inaugurate various infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,200 crore and address a public meeting from the historic Kangla Fort.
