This historic Rs 8070 crore Bairabi-Sairang railway line will establish direct rail connectivity between Mizoram and other parts of the country.

PM Modi in Mizoram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Mizoram's first railway line on Saturday. This historic railway line, Bairabi-Sairang, has been built at a cost of Rs 8070 crore. It is considered one of the most challenging projects of Indian Railways. The Prime Minister also flagged off three new train services through video conferencing. Along with this, he also laid the foundation stone of several projects for various sectors like railways, roads, energy and sports etc.

Mizoram's first railway line 

The construction of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line began in 2015 and is 45 km long. It includes a total of 45 tunnels, 55 large and 87 small bridges. The highest pilot bridge of the railway line, Bridge No. 144, is located near Sairang, with a height of 114 meters, which is higher than the Qutub Minar.

This new line will establish direct rail connectivity between Mizoram and other parts of the country, providing citizens the opportunity for safe, fast and affordable travel. According to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), this railway line will ensure timely supply of food items, fertilizers and other essential commodities and improve regional accessibility and logistics capacity.

Improvement in passenger and freight transport

According to officials, this railway line will improve both passenger and freight transport. Travel time will be reduced, tourism will be promoted and employment opportunities will be created. Also, it will fulfill the long-standing demand of the people of Mizoram. This new railway line and road projects will improve the connectivity and logistics capacity of Mizoram. This will not only facilitate travel and cargo transportation, but will also boost tourism, employment and regional development.

PM Modi Flags Off New Trains

Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off three new express trains via video conferencing, enhancing rail connectivity for Mizoram. The new services include the Aizawl (Sairang)–Delhi Rajdhani Express, the Sairang–Guwahati Express, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express. According to the Railway Ministry, these services will connect Mizoram’s capital to major parts of the country, boosting travel and trade opportunities for the region.

Foundation Stones For Key Projects

Along with the trains, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for several major projects. These included the ₹500 crore Aizawl Bypass Road under the PM-DevINE scheme, roads in Thenzaval-Shiyalsuk and Khankaw-Rongura, and the Chhimtuipui Bridge. Additionally, he inaugurated facilities such as a multipurpose indoor sports hall under Khelo India, an LPG bottling plant, and new residential schools under PMJVK and Eklavya schemes. These projects aim to strengthen connectivity, empower farmers, and improve education and infrastructure in Mizoram.
