New Delhi: A day after the Women's Reservation Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:30 pm on Saturday. The announcement has been made, but no further details about the subject of the address have been shared yet.
The development comes after Opposition parties blocked the Women Reservation Bill in Parliament on Friday.
The Constitutional (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, related to the Women's Reservation Bill, failed to pass in the Lok Sabha. The bill was discussed continuously for two days. After that, the bill was defeated in the Friday evening vote. 298 MPs voted in favour of the amendment bill, while 230 voted against it.
A total of 528 MPs voted in the Lok Sabha on the Women's Reservation Bill. Passage of the bill required the votes of 326 MPs, but only 298 voted in favour. Consequently, the bill failed to pass.
BJP is continuously targeting the opposition through press conferences. BJP leader Smriti Irani said that Congress and its supporting parties celebrated the fact that the political women of this country, who were fighting for only 33 per cent rights, had been struggling for years.
Additionally, BJP leader and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Lok Sabha MP Ravi Shankar Prasad held a press conference on the issue of women's reservation. During the conference, both leaders launched a scathing attack on the Congress party and leveled various allegations.
Earlier today, while addressing a press conference at Congress headquarters, Priyanka Gandhi called the development a "huge victory for democracy" and a "dark day for the BJP." She also pointed out that the ruling party at the center had suffered its first defeat in Parliament since assuming power in 2014.
