New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra questions PM Modi over the historic fall of the rupee, saying he had in the past targeted UPA over such issues. She demanded accountability as the currency hit an all-time low.

Rupee Breaches 86 Against Dollar

The Indian rupee hit an all-time low on Friday after having dipped 18 paise to 86.04 against the US dollar, settling at a new historic low amidst reports of a strong dollar, further skyrocketing crude oil prices, and foreign fund outflows. Priyanka Gandhi remembered his previous statements as Gujarat chief minister when he linked the rupee's value to the prestige of government. She demanded answers from PM, saying the latter has failed to uphold his own standards.

Recalling the UPA era, Priyanka said that when the rupee was at 58-59 against the dollar, Modi had claimed he "knew everything" about stabilizing the currency. Now, under his leadership, she noted, the rupee has broken all records. Forex experts said that the strengthening dollar was mainly on account of global demand and soaring crude oil prices, whereas declining domestic equity markets added more pressure to a debilitated currency.

Congress Wants PM Modi Held Responsible

Priyanka Gandhi attacked the Narendra Modi government with poor economic management and demanded an explanation on its record from the public. "All records of the rupee's fall have been broken," she said while asking the PM to address the nation on this issue.
