National news: Punjab’s senior police officer, DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar of Ropar Range, faced a major shock. The CBI arrested him from his Mohali office on October 16. Soon after his arrest, the state government suspended him. The action raised serious questions about corruption in Punjab Police. People are now asking how such a high-ranking officer could be involved in bribery.
After the arrest, the CBI raided Bhullar’s Chandigarh home. Officers found almost ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold, two luxury car keys, 22 costly watches, and expensive liquor. They also recovered a pistol, revolver, shotgun, and several live cartridges. The raid created shockwaves across Punjab as the huge wealth suggested deep-rooted corruption.
The case started after a complaint by a scrap dealer from Mandi Gobindgarh in Fatehgarh Sahib. He alleged that DIG Bhullar demanded monthly bribes to settle an FIR filed against him in 2023. The businessman also claimed Bhullar threatened to falsely implicate him in more criminal cases if he refused to pay.
CBI not only arrested Bhullar but also nabbed his middleman, named Krishanu. During the raid, officials recovered ₹21 lakh from him. This money was allegedly collected as bribe from the scrap dealer. CBI registered the recovery as solid evidence against both Bhullar and his aide.
The very next day, October 17, Bhullar was presented before a CBI court. Considering the seriousness of the charges, the judge sent him to judicial custody. He will remain in jail while the CBI continues its investigation. The court’s decision has made the case even more serious for the disgraced police officer.
Bhullar is not an ordinary officer; he is the son of Punjab’s former Director General of Police (DGP) M.S. Bhullar. In November 2024, he was appointed as DIG of Ropar Range, covering Mohali, Rupnagar, and Fatehgarh Sahib. His fall from such a powerful position has embarrassed the entire Punjab Police department.
The arrest has badly shaken public trust. People now question the integrity of the police system itself. If senior officers demand bribes, ordinary citizens wonder how they will get justice. The case has become not only a corruption scandal but also a test of the government’s will to punish high-ranking officials.
