China’s Monday publication of a new standard map has sparked a verbal spat amongst the country’s leaders about the territory they now control. Notably, the map depicts the 1962 occupation of Aksai Chin and the claim to South Tibet made by Arunachal Pradesh. The map showed that China owned the entire South China Sea.

Rahul Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday by reiterating his assertions that China is ‘invading’ Indian land in Ladakh. Congress leader spoke to the issue of China incorporating Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai China as a part of its territory in its most recent edition of the “Standard Map” as a significant one.

While talking to media person, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “The Prime Minister had said – not an inch of land has been lost in Ladakh. This is absolutely false. Entire Ladakh knows that China has usurped our land. The matter of the map is serious, but China has actually taken our land. The Prime Minister should say something on this.”

Congress MP, Rahul Gandhi who visited Ladakh, earlier this month said that its claim that not an inch of Indian land was taken by China’s People Liberation Army (PLA) troops “is not true”.

He emphasised that local people are concerned about China taking our land. “They have said that the Chinese troops took away their grazing land. However, the PM says not an inch of land was taken away. This is not true, you can ask anyone here,” Rahul had said.

In response to the media queries on the standard map released by China, the official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi of MEA asserted that India has initiated a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the Chinese side on so called 2023 “standard map” of China that lays to claim to India’s territory. Also, he rejected the claims.
