Assam Police Summons Randeep Surjewala in Himanta Sarma Wife Controversy (ANI)
New Delhi. Congress's troubles are showing no sign of relief. Senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has been summoned by Assam Police after Pawan Khera. The case is related to Riniki Bhuiyan Sharma, wife of Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Assam Crime Branch has called Surjewala to Guwahati on 23 May. Will have to appear for questioning.
The controversy started when Congress leader Pawan Kheda made several serious allegations against Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife during a press conference. The allegations included holding a foreign passport, having assets abroad and alleged links to foreign companies. Later Himanta Sarma and his wife termed these allegations as completely false, political and fabricated.
After these allegations, Assam Police had registered a case against Pawan Kheda on the complaint of Riniki Bhuiyan Sharma. Kheda was also interrogated for several hours in Guwahati. He later moved the court for anticipatory bail and got relief from the Supreme Court.
According to reports, the investigating agencies are now expanding the scope of this case. Sources say that summons have been issued to Randeep Surjewala on the basis of some statements and social media activities that came out during interrogation. However, the investigating agencies have not officially shared much information.
This matter has now taken a political form. BJP is accusing Congress of spoiling the election atmosphere by making false allegations, while Congress is calling it an attempt to suppress the voice of the opposition. This controversy has become more discussed after the Assam Assembly elections.
Both Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Riniki Bhuyan Sharma have denied all the allegations from the beginning. They say that a political conspiracy was hatched against them using fake documents and edited material. They also talked about legal action.
Now whether Surjewala will go to Guwahati on May 23 or not remains to be seen. But it is certain that this controversy will continue for a long time.
