New Delhi: India is going to celebrate its 77th Republic Day on 26 January 2026. Like every year, this time too a question is repeatedly arising among the people regarding this date– is it the 77th Republic Day or the 78th? Some people are also considering it as the 78th. Actually, this confusion is arising because of the way of counting the years, whereas officially the situation is absolutely clear.
India gained independence on 15 August 1947, but the country declared itself a republic on 26 January 1950. On this day the Constitution came into force and India started running its own laws. This date is related to the foundation of democracy, not independence.
The first formal Republic Day was celebrated on 26 January 1951 after the implementation of the Constitution. That is, the Constitution came into force in 1950, but the celebration started the next year. This becomes the basis for further calculations.
If 1951 is considered the first Republic Day, then in 2026 its count directly reaches 77. There are 76 years from 1950 to 2026, but because the first celebration was in 1951, the number of celebrations becomes one higher. This is why Republic Day in 2026 is the 77th.
Some people count by directly adding years from 1950, which is not the correct method. At the same time, some people connect it with the year of independence, whereas Republic Day is related to the Constitution. For this reason, confusion is seen every year.
‘Vande Mataram’ has been specially kept at the center stage in the Republic Day celebrations of 2026, as it is completing 150 years. Along with this, a glimpse of 'self-reliant India' will also be visible in the entire event.
This time two big leaders of the European Union will be the chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations. The President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission will attend the parade on 26 January. The EU-India summit will also be organized the next day on 27 January. This is considered important from the point of view of India-Europe relations.
There will be about a 90-minute-long parade on the duty path. It will include military contingents, modern weapon systems, drone displays, and new regiments. In the cultural tableaux, glimpses of different states and government departments will be seen with the theme 'Vande Mataram.'
This time there will be participation of the European Naval Contingent for the first time. Apart from this, visual elements like painting displays, floral arrangements, and balloon releases have also been added.
Band performances and cultural programs will be organized across the country from 19 to 26 January. There will be a rehearsal for Beating the Retreat on January 28 and the main ceremony on January 29.
Republic Day is not just a parade. It is a symbol of the Constitution, democracy, sovereignty, and unity of the country. This day reminds us that India makes and runs its own laws.
There will be a national holiday on 26th January in the entire country. Schools, colleges and most offices will remain closed, while millions of people will watch the historic event on TV and digital platforms.
