Sandeshkhali Controversy: Amidst the ongoing turmoil in the Sandeshkhali area of West Bengal, a fresh controversy has erupted, casting a spotlight on the tensions in North 24 Parganas. A significant police presence has been deployed to prevent Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and his supporters from advancing further. However, amidst the chaos, workers allegedly directed derogatory remarks at a Sikh IPS officer stationed at the scene, branding him a 'Khalistani'. The officer expressed his dismay at the incident, which has since garnered attention after a video of the altercation went viral on social media platforms.

Political Responses

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee swiftly seized upon the video, using it to criticize the BJP's conduct. She shared the video on her social media platform and denounced the BJP's alleged divisive tactics, accusing them of exceeding constitutional boundaries. Banerjee condemned the attempt to tarnish the reputation of Sikhs, a community revered for their contributions and steadfast patriotism towards the nation.

Denial and Defiance

However, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, present during the altercation alongside Suvendu Adhikari, refuted claims that the IPS officer was diligently performing his duties. Paul rejected the allegation that BJP supporters had labelled the officer as 'Khalistani', asserting that their focus was solely on the officer's conduct. Despite the denial, the incident has sparked a broader conversation about the role of religion and professionalism in public service.

Viral Video Sparks Outrage

The video circulating on social media captures the tense exchange, wherein BJP supporters allegedly directed the derogatory term at IPS officer Jaspreet Singh. In response, Singh questioned the basis of the accusation, highlighting his religious attire as the sole reason behind the slur. He expressed his dismay, questioning whether fulfilling his duties with integrity and wearing a turban automatically qualified him as a 'Khalistani'. The incident has reignited discussions surrounding religious tolerance and professionalism within law enforcement agencies.

Political Polarisation

While Singh maintained his commitment to his duties, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee reiterated her administration's resolve to preserve social harmony in the state. She warned against any attempts to disrupt the peace and vowed to take stringent legal action to safeguard communal harmony. In contrast, the BJP denied the allegations, asserting that the police officers were neglecting their responsibilities, fueling further political polarization amidst the escalating tensions in Sandeshkhali.
