Shashi Tharoor (Shashi Tharoor)

The Congress party is grappling with a internal divide concerning the inclusion of MP Shashi Tharoor in an all-party delegation to be dispatched overseas. The Kerala state unit of Congress has decided to avoid getting involved in the controversy, leaving it to the central leadership.

The background

The Indian government has formed a 7-member all-party MP delegation to enlighten the world about India's stance on Operation Sindoor and cross-border terrorism. Shashi Tharoor was among the names who featured in the delegation, although not among those who were nominated by the Congress party.

The controversy

The inclusion of Tharoor's name has sparked controversy within the Congress party, with some leaders questioning his decision to accept the invitation without consulting the party leadership. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly VD Satheesan said that the central leadership should voice its opinion on the matter.

Tharoor's defense

Tharoor has justified his act, saying he didn't notice any politics played and was officially invited by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju since he was an external affairs background person. He says he accepted the invitation without hesitation.

Congress leadership's stand

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, a senior leader of the Congress, has asked Tharoor to fulfill his "first duty" as a Congress MP by seeking the party leadership's clearance before moving further. Radhakrishnan underlined that Tharoor has two roles - one as an international personality and the other as a Congressional MP.

The way forward

The controversy of including Tharoor in the delegation has raised concerns with questions being asked about the party line on the issue. Though the Kerala Congress wing has decided to remain above board on the issue, the central leadership will have to make a decision on the matter.

Tharoor's role

As a Congress Working Committee (CWC) member, Tharoor's move is anticipated to be in favor of the party. Nevertheless, his choice to invite the Chinese ambassador without the knowledge of the party leadership has generated controversy within the party. The Shashi Tharoor controversy over his membership in the all-party delegation has put into focus the delicacy of handling party politics and foreign diplomacy. As events continue to unfold, it is left to be seen how the Congress party will handle the matter.
