News Delhi: Various speculations have been going on for the last several days regarding the stay of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in India. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar made the picture completely clear by giving a big statement. He said that Sheikh Hasina can stay in India as long as she wants, as it is completely her personal decision.

During the program, he said that Hasina had come to India at a time when the political situation in Bangladesh was extremely tense. At that time India had given them security and place to stay on humanitarian grounds. Jaishankar said, "Today's circumstances are different. It is absolutely her decision as to how long she wants to stay here."

Why did Hasina come to India?

Sheikh Hasina reached India directly after leaving the post of Prime Minister in August 2024. After his resignation, the political environment of Bangladesh became increasingly unstable. Many new cases were registered against him and some reports even revealed that he has been sentenced to death. In such an environment, serious concerns had arisen regarding their safety.

It is in this background that India gave them safe space without any political pressure or calculation. India's effort was to ensure that the former Prime Minister of the neighboring country got the security she needed at that time, on humanitarian grounds. This is the same policy that India has always followed in its neighborhood diplomacy—to provide help in difficult times.

Will this affect India-Bangladesh relations?

Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar's latest statement has made it clear that India does not view this matter as a political dispute. According to him, Sheikh Hasina's stay in India is her personal decision and it should not have any negative impact on the relations between the two countries.

India believes that its relations with Bangladesh do not depend on any one person. There has been long-standing cooperation between the two countries on major issues like trade, security, border management and connectivity. India wants the same cooperation to move forward with the new government formed in Dhaka.

How long will Hasina last? Will she go back?

Jaishankar answered this question very easily. He said that it is only Sheikh Hasina's decision as to when she will return or what further plans she will make. There are no obstacles from the Indian side and no deadline has been set.

He said, "From the humanitarian point of view, the step we took was right according to the circumstances. Now the further decision is their own."

India's stable and sensitive neighborhood policy

Overall, the questions that were being raised about Sheikh Hasina's stay in India are now almost over. India has made it clear that the door is open for Hasina and there is no restriction on her stay. This move also strengthens India's stable and sensitive neighborhood policy.
