INDIA Bloc March: SP Leaders Climb Barricades as Rahul, Priyanka and Akhilesh Stage Sit-In (ANI)
New Delhi: The opposition's protest against the Election Commission regarding Special Intensive Review (SIR) took to the streets on Tuesday. More than 140 MPs of INDIA block are marching from Parliament House towards Nirvachan Sadan. Along with raising questions about the SIR process, opposition MPs are also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. During the march, opposition leaders raised the issue of transparency in the electoral process and alleged irregularities in the voter list.
The INDIA block had already announced a march to the Election Commission office on October 6. Opposition parties allege that during SIR, many questions are being raised regarding the process of deletion and addition of names in the voter lists. The opposition says that the names of eligible voters should not be left out of the list under any circumstances. Regarding this issue, the MPs left the Parliament House and moved towards the Election House.
During the demonstration, opposition MPs also prominently raised the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition leaders say that the Election Commission should give clear answers to the questions related to the voter list. There have been protests against CEC earlier also from the INDIA block. During the demonstration around Jantar Mantar on October 2, information came to light that more than 700 people were detained.

Opposition parties allege that large-scale changes are being made in the voter list during SIR and this may affect the rights of genuine voters. Leaders of INDIA block are calling it a serious issue related to the electoral process. In Tuesday's march also, opposition MPs demanded accountability from the Election Commission on the same basis. However, the Election Commission has rejected the allegations being raised regarding SIR and said that the amendment in the voter list is being done as per the prescribed legal procedure.
The matter regarding changes in SIR and voter list has also reached the Supreme Court. During the recent hearing, the court has raised questions on the records and process related to the changes made in Form 6. The opposition has presented the court's observations as support for its allegations and intensified its demand for clarification from the Election Commission. On the other hand, the Election Commission says that its decisions are taken under the legal process and prescribed rules.
In view of the march of opposition MPs, security has been increased in Central Delhi between Parliament and the Constituency House. Barricading has been done at many places and a large number of police and central security forces have been deployed. Police are also monitoring the movement in Parliament, Election House and surrounding major roads. Efforts are being made to keep the protesters within the prescribed route and security arrangements.
