New Delhi: India on Tuesday lodged a strong protest with Iran after the missile attacks on two merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The Deputy Chief of the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi was called to the Ministry of External Affairs and informed about India's objection. An Indian sailor has died in this attack, while many other Indians have been injured. After the incident, India clearly said that attacks on merchant ships passing through international sea routes cannot be accepted under any circumstances.

How many Indians came under the attack?

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, a total of 30 Indian crew members were present on UAE-flagged MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa. An Indian sailor deployed on Al Bahiyah lost his life while another was injured. Nine people among the Indians aboard the Mombasa were injured. The condition of two of them remains critical. The injured are being treated in local hospitals and Indian officials are continuously monitoring the situation.

What did India say to Iran?

India raised the issue with the Iranian side that such attacks not only affect the citizens of any one country but also affect international maritime trade and the global supply system. India demanded that incidents of targeting merchant ships and civilian infrastructure stop immediately and the security of sea lanes be ensured.

Did you also express concern over the increasing tension in West Asia?

The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement that the continuously increasing military tension in West Asia is becoming a challenge to the stability of the entire region. India urged all parties concerned to exercise restraint, stop violence and find a solution through diplomatic dialogue. The ministry says that restoring peace in the region is also important from the point of view of global trade and energy supply.

Are Indian missions coordinating?

The government said that the Indian Embassy and consulates in the UAE are in constant touch with the local administration. Medical aid is being provided to the injured Indians and necessary information is also being given to their families. Expressing condolences to the family of the deceased sailor, the Ministry of External Affairs said that the government is committed to providing all possible help to the affected Indians.

What is India's stance on maritime security?

India once again said that safe and uninterrupted navigation in international waterways is a shared responsibility of the entire world. The government believes that attacks on merchant ships not only increase regional tensions but also have a direct impact on the global economy. Therefore, such attacks should be stopped immediately and all parties should return to the path of dialogue.
