Chennai: A decision by the Tamil Nadu government has sparked a fresh political controversy. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has appointed businessman and film producer K. Venkat Narayana as Tamil Nadu's Special Representative in New Delhi. This post carries the rank of a Cabinet Minister. The opposition has bombarded the government with questions regarding this appointment.

Was a new post created for one year?

According to the order issued by the state government, this post has been created for an initial period of one year. Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar issued the order regarding this. The remaining terms of the appointment will be announced later.

What is the role of a Special Representative?

The responsibility of Tamil Nadu's Special Representative in New Delhi is to facilitate coordination between the central government and the state government.
The person holding this post coordinates meetings between the Chief Minister and Union Ministers, tracks central schemes and funding, monitors policy-related matters, and assists in coordinating with the state's Members of Parliament (MPs) during parliamentary sessions.
Until now, this crucial post has generally been held by experienced politicians.

Who is K. Venkat Narayana?

K. Venkat Narayana is the Chairman of the Bengaluru-based KVN Group. His company operates in the real estate and entertainment sectors.
He has previously served as the CEO of the Prestige Group. In 2020, he launched KVN Productions, and the company is currently producing Chief Minister Vijay's final film, 'Jana Nayakan'. It is believed that this will be Vijay's last film before he becomes fully active in politics.

Did the Opposition raise questions?

Opposition parties have targeted the government over this appointment. DMK Rajya Sabha MP P. Wilson stated that appointing a film producer to such a crucial post—responsible for safeguarding Tamil Nadu's interests—diminishes the dignity of the position.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagendran questioned how an individual with close ties to Karnataka could effectively represent Tamil Nadu in Delhi. He termed the move a "major betrayal" of the state's people. The AIADMK alleged that the government is acting at the behest of the Congress government in Karnataka, while AMMK chief TTV Dhinakaran stated that the government is awarding key positions to close associates rather than basing appointments on administrative competence.

Did TVK Come to the Defence?

Vijay's party, TVK, dismissed the opposition's allegations. Party leaders state that Venkat Narayanan stood by Vijay during a difficult phase while the film 'Jana Nayakan' was being produced, and this appointment is a gesture of gratitude for that support.
The party further maintains that Venkat Narayanan possesses extensive experience in handling major corporate and infrastructure projects, which is why he has been entrusted with this responsibility.
This is not the first time Chief Minister Vijay has faced controversy regarding the appointment of close associates.
Previously, his long-time manager, Jagadish Palaniswami, was appointed as Private Secretary (Political).
Additionally, astrologer Ricky Radhan Pandit Vetrivel was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (Political) (OSD), but the government was forced to withdraw that decision following intense criticism.
