Kerala: The Kerala police filed four FIRs and detained six individuals accused of repeatedly sexually assaulting a girl over two years in Pathanamthitta. Authorities said that the survivor, 18 now, claimed she has been abused by more than 60 people since she turned 16. The case was first brought to light during counseling conducted by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

Counseling uncovered the atrocious abuse

The victim's ordeal came to light when teachers at her educational institution noticed a change in her behavior and brought it to the attention of the CWC. The girl revealed the repeated assaults she suffered during a school counseling session. The CWC chairman, Rajeev N, said that after this revelation, the police were informed, and an investigation was initiated.

Abuse in sports camps and by trusted individuals

According to reports, the girl, an aspiring sportsperson, was abused in various places, including sports camps, by coaches, classmates, and local residents. This shocking abuse reportedly involved trusted figures within her community. Police said the victim did not have a personal phone and had saved the phone numbers of around 40 individuals who had allegedly abused her on her father's mobile.

Police investigation underway

Thus, up to now, six suspects were arrested by Kerala police. Meanwhile, one has already been kept in custody, for another separate case. Under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and other pertinent sections of Indian Penal Code cases have been lodged. Further authorities are working for identifying and detaining more suspect(s) upon the victim statement and other supporting evidence.
It is also the duty of police to ensure well-being of victim.
To verify the allegations, members of CWC arranged counseling with a psychologist for the victim. According to the chairman, the gravity of the charges established itself during a more in-depth interaction with the victim. In this unusual and deeply disturbing case, the police continue their investigation. This, however, requires public vigilance and much stronger protective measures for such victims.

Public outrage

The revelations have sent shockwaves across Kerala, prompting calls for stringent action against the perpetrators. Child rights activists and local leaders have condemned the incident, urging authorities to ensure justice for the survivor and implement stricter safeguards for children.
