Kolkata: The West Bengal Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan, who had been on the run from law enforcement agencies, on Monday near the Indo-Nepal border and was later taken into custody duirng a coordinated operation.
TMC candidate Jahangir Khan, who became the centre of controversy during the West Bengal Assembly elections after repolling was ordered in his constituency, Falta, due to the reports of irregularities, was arrested by the STF near the Nepal border in connection with multiple FIRs, including allegations of tampering with EVMs by applying tapes on BJP symbols on the EVMs in the South 24 Parganas constituency.
Just two days before the Assemebly election results, the Election Commission ordered repolling in the Falta Assembly constituency due to several irregularities and complaints.
During the election campaigning for the Assembly elections, Jahangir Khan's confrontation with Ajay Pal Sharma, who is the well-known IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh and was deployed as an electoral officer in Bengal ahead of the polls, drew significant attention.
Jahangir Khan had said that "If he is Singham, then I am Pushpa, I will not bow down." Following reports of electoral irregularities, the Election Commission cancelled the Falta elections. Re-polling was held in Falta on May 26. Later, Jahangir Khan withdrew from the election two days before the voting.
He said the decision to pull out of the race was taken for the welfare of people in Falta.
"I am the son of Falta and I want Falta to remain peaceful and progress. Our Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is giving a special package for the development of Falta, which is why I have decided to step away from the repoll process in the constituency," Khan said.
