New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday invited Trinamool Congress (TMC) National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee Abhishek Banerjee for a meeting on June 19 to hear his side of the party split dispute.
The development comes after a group of 20 rebel TMC MPs sought recognition as a separate parliamentary group following their merger with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
About 20 rebel TMC MPs have demanded recognition as a separate faction after merging with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has decided to hear both sides before making a decision.
According to sources, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has asked Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee to appear for a meeting on June 19 so that he can present his side on the split in the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
The rebel MPs have already met with Om Birla, while Mamata's faction has requested an appointment. Sources said that Birla will make a decision based on laws, rules, and regulations.
The Mamta faction wrote a letter to Om Birla, urging the Speaker not to recognise any rebel TMC faction in the Lok Sabha or grant them separate status.
