National News: US President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of an import duty of 25% on all products exported from India from August 1. Along with this, Trump also announced that additional fines will be imposed on India for buying oil and weapons from Russia. Both these measures are being described as trade retaliatory measures.
Trump said on social media that India is his "friend," but its import duties are the highest in the world. He also accused India of imposing "unpleasant and harsh" non-monetary trade barriers. He also said that India has always bought military equipment from Russia, and even during the Russia-Ukraine war, it has been the largest buyer of energy from Russia. Trump says that this behavior is not right, and that is why India will have to pay these tariffs and fines.

Trump's announcement has sparked political turmoil in India. Congress has directly attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh said that the Modi government's foreign policy has completely failed. Criticizing Modi's efforts to get closer to Trump, he said that shows like 'Howdy Modi,' hugging, and promoting Trump did not help India in any way.
Jairam Ramesh said that now Prime Minister Modi should take inspiration from late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and stand up to Trump. He said that Modi thought that India would get some benefit by tolerating America's insult, but it is clear from Trump's recent decisions that nothing like this happened.
Congress alleged that Trump tried to stop 'Operation Sindoor' many times and continued to support Pakistan. Ramesh alleged that Trump hosted a banquet for the Pakistani general who masterminded the Pahalgam terror attack and helped Pakistan get funds from the IMF and World Bank.
This decision of Trump can affect the trade relations between India and America. Trade between the two countries is already considered unbalanced, and now new trade barriers can make the relations between the two countries even more difficult.
