A mysterious illness has surfaced in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, leading to the tragic death of eight children from a single family in Badhale village. The fatalities have sparked alarm and grief in the region as health authorities rush to identify the cause.

According to officials, six children from Mohammed Aslam’s family were admitted to the Community Health Centre on Saturday evening after their health deteriorated suddenly. Despite efforts by medical teams, the condition of the children worsened, resulting in the death of a five-year-old child, Nabina, on Sunday. Two more children succumbed on Monday, increasing the death toll to eight.

Viral infection suspected

Preliminary investigations suggest a viral infection as the potential cause of the fatalities, though the exact nature of the illness remains unclear. Health officials have noted that this is not the first time the village has faced such a crisis.

“Since December last year, nine individuals from two families in this area have died under similar circumstances. Unfortunately, we were unable to determine the cause even then,” an official stated. The latest incident has brought the total death toll linked to the mysterious illness to 12, leaving residents in a state of panic.

Teams of experts begin investigations

To address the crisis, expert teams from the National Institute of Virology (Pune), PGIMER (Chandigarh), AIIMS (Delhi), and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have been dispatched to the affected village. These teams are conducting detailed investigations and collecting samples to uncover the source of the illness and prevent further casualties.

The tragic deaths have left the family in deep mourning, while the entire village remains on high alert. Authorities are urging caution and ensuring medical teams are closely monitoring other children in the area.
