Lucknow: The police have arrested Dr. Rameez, the accused in a case involving allegations of religious conversion and sexual harassment at Lucknow's renowned King George Medical University (KGMU). The Lucknow police had offered a reward of Rs 50,000 for his arrest and had also posted notices at his residence for property attachment. Rameez was found guilty in the Vishakha Committee's investigation.
The university's Vishakha Committee had found the accused resident doctor, Dr. Rameez, guilty in the case involving allegations of religious conversion and sexual harassment. The committee's investigation revealed that the accused concealed his marital status, subjected the victim to mental harassment, and violated the provisions of the Sexual Harassment Act.
Dr. Monica, the chairperson of the Vishakha Committee, stated that the two had a relationship since July 2025, which the accused also admitted. The investigation revealed that the relationship was confined to a private apartment, and the victim learned in September 2025 that the accused was already married.
According to the information available so far, the victim came to KGMU in June 2025 for a master's course. During this time, she befriended the accused, which later progressed to discussions of marriage.
The victim's father has alleged that his daughter refused to change her religion, after which the pressure on her increased. He alleged that due to this mental stress, the victim had attempted suicide. This case has now become the subject of serious debate regarding sensitive issues such as university discipline, women's safety, and religious conversion.
