Vaishno Devi Yatra Remains Shut (Social media)
National News: The pilgrimage to the holy cave temple Mata Vaishno Devi, located in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, remained halted for the eleventh consecutive day. This pilgrimage was stopped after a massive landslide on August 26. 34 devotees were killed in this accident in the Ardhkunwari area of Trikuta Hills, while more than 20 people were seriously injured. Immediately after the accident, the administration suspended the pilgrimage till further orders, keeping in view the safety of the devotees.
In the last ten days, there was continuous heavy rain in the Jammu division, which caused floods and landslides in many places. Now the weather has improved, and the sun has also come out in many areas. Despite this, the administration has clearly said that the pilgrimage cannot be started until the route is completely safe and the repair work is completed. Officials say that safety is paramount and haste can put the lives of devotees at risk.
According to experts, this is the longest suspension of the yatra since the restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The road from Katra to Ardhkumwari has collapsed at many places, and commercial structures are also damaged. Repair work is going on on a war footing, but engineering teams are proceeding cautiously in view of the possibility of landslides.
The closure of the Yatra has not only affected thousands of devotees, but local business has also been badly affected. Hotels, restaurants, shops, and transport services depend on the passengers. These businesses are suffering financial losses due to the stoppage of the Yatra. Many devotees are stranded in Katra and Jammu, for whose convenience the local train services are also disrupted. This has further increased the difficulties of the passengers.
The administration has indicated that the Yatra will be resumed only after a complete assessment of the situation and completion of repair work. At present, devotees are being appealed to be patient. However, it is not yet decided when the route for darshan will be opened.
Devotees are hoping that soon there will be an opportunity to have darshan of Mata. But officials say that no risk will be taken and the Yatra will start only when the route becomes completely safe.
