The fire and the loud explosion caused panic in the area. However, no deaths or injuries have been reported so far.
The incident occurred at a well operated by Deep Industries Limited in Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. Following the explosion, there were concerns about potential damage to the ONGC pipeline, leading to fears of further gas leaks. The fire was so intense that the entire area was engulfed in black smoke and flames. As a precautionary measure, the administration began evacuating the surrounding area. Electricity supply was also temporarily shut off to prevent further damage. The use of cooking gas stoves has also been prohibited.
The visuals of the incident are quite frightening. The video shows employees running for their lives.
ONGC has a strong presence in the Krishna Godavari Delta Basin, East Godavari district, and surrounding areas of Andhra Pradesh. It operates through its Rajahmundry Onshore Asset and Eastern Offshore Asset. It produces natural gas, crude oil, and associated hydrocarbons from several offshore rigs in the Bay of Bengal and onshore fields in East Godavari.
Hydrocarbons from the offshore platforms are transported to onshore processing facilities, such as those in Yanam district of Puducherry and Mallavaram in Andhra Pradesh, through dedicated subsea and onshore pipeline networks. Field infrastructure is also spread across areas like Jathipaka. After processing, the gas is supplied to the national transmission network, while the crude oil is sent to other locations for further handling and refining.
