New Delhi: There good news in store for the people of North India. The worst phase of a gruelling, sizzling summer seems to be over. Residents of North India must prepare for a significant change in weather starting tonight. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated hailstorms across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi-NCR, and Western Uttar Pradesh. This shift in weather patterns is expected to commence this evening and may persist until May 30.

According to weather experts, this weather system has formed due to the interaction of a Western Disturbance—situated over Northern Pakistan—and local winds. Currently, thunderclouds are gathering near the borders of Haryana and Rajasthan. The department has issued an alert regarding strong winds, which could reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour. In certain areas, the speed of dust storms could escalate to between 80 and 120 kilometers per hour, raising concerns that daily life and public activities could be disrupted.

Which regions will be affected?

Delhi-NCR: Rainfall is likely to begin this evening. Along with strong winds and thunderstorms, isolated hailstorms may also occur in some locations.

Punjab and Haryana: The entire region faces a risk of storms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall.
Western Uttar Pradesh: The impact of rainfall and strong winds will be felt across the region.
Chandigarh: The entire area is likely to experience adverse weather conditions.

Meteorologists Navdeep Dahiya and Dr. Pradeep have issued specific warnings regarding the dust storms. They stated that in some areas, wind speeds could become intense enough to uproot trees. Additionally, electric poles could topple, and roofs could be blown away.

What is causing this change?

A Western Disturbance is a natural weather system that originates in the west. It typically brings snowfall during the winter months and rainfall and storms during the summer. On this occasion, the disturbance is particularly active, resulting in a sudden deterioration of weather conditions across North India. Amidst the intense heat of 'Nautapa' (the nine hottest days of summer), this rainfall and stormy weather will offer some relief to the public; however, the accompanying strong winds also pose a risk of causing damage.

If the situation becomes more severe, further IMD alerts may be issued. Currently, this weather system is expected to remain active until May 30. Thereafter, the weather is likely to clear up. People across North India have been enduring scorching heat for the past several days. This rainfall and accompanying storms will lead to a drop in temperatures, offering some relief from the heat. However, the risks associated with strong winds and thunderstorms should not be ignored.
