Weather Forecast: When Will North India Get Relief From Heatwave? Know IMD Rain Alert

New Delhi: North India is currently experiencing a severe heatwave. Several states—including UP, Bihar, and Delhi—are bearing the brunt of a heatwave. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has stated that heatwave conditions are expected to persist across North and Central India for the next two days. However, a timeline for relief from the heatwave and severe temperatures has now emerged.

What is the IMD Forecast?

The Meteorological Department has indicated that starting May 29, maximum temperatures will drop, and heatwave conditions will subside, thereby providing relief from the intense heat. In Uttar Pradesh, specifically, relief is expected to begin as early as tomorrow. An alert has been issued for Western Uttar Pradesh warning of rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hailstorms between May 28 and May 31.

Over the next two to three days, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for Northeast India and adjoining East India; similarly, South India is expected to witness such rainfall today, May 27, with specific alerts issued for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal between May 27 and May 29. Furthermore, an alert for moderate to severe thunderstorms and rain—accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 70 km/h—has been issued for North, Central, and East India between May 28 and May 30.

Regarding Northeast India, light to moderate rainfall—accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds—is expected in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on May 27 and 28. Isolated rainfall is also forecast for Arunachal Pradesh on June 1 and 2; for Assam and Meghalaya on May 27, 28, and June 2; and for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on May 27, 28, 30, and June 2.

Turning to South India, isolated to moderate rainfall—accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds—is likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Interior Karnataka from May 27 to June 2; similar conditions are expected in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana, and Interior Karnataka from May 27 to May 31. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on May 27; in North Interior Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from May 27 to 29; and in South Interior Karnataka on May 27 and 28. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from May 27 to 29; in Kerala and Mahe on May 27, as well as on June 1 and 2; in Lakshadweep on June 1 and 2; and in Coastal Karnataka, Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, and Telangana on May 27.

Regarding Eastern India, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is forecast for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 27 to June 2; for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim from May 27 to 29; and for Gangetic West Bengal from May 27 to 31. Scattered to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is likely in Bihar and Odisha from May 27 to 31, and in Jharkhand from May 27 to June 1.

In Northern India, scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall—accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds—is likely in Jammu & Kashmir and Uttarakhand from May 27 to 30, and in Himachal Pradesh on May 28 and 29. Similar conditions—scattered to widespread light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds—are also forecast for Western Uttar Pradesh from May 28 to 31, and for Eastern Uttar Pradesh from May 27 to 31.

What is the IMD Rainfall Alert?

Meanwhile, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Western Uttar Pradesh on May 29. Furthermore, thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are likely in Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand on May 28 and 29. Similar weather conditions are expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on May 30, as well as in East Uttar Pradesh during the period from May 28 to 30.

Additionally, heavy rainfall is forecast at isolated places in Uttarakhand and West Uttar Pradesh on May 29, and in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on May 29 and 30. Hailstorms are expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh on May 28 and 29, and in East Uttar Pradesh on May 29. Dust storms are likely at some locations in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on May 28 and 29.
