Kolkata: The ED has made a major arrest in connection with Kolkata's 'Sona Pappu' case. The ED has arrested Kolkata's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Shantanu Sinha Biswas. Despite being issued repeated summonses, DCP Shantanu failed to appear before the agency. A lookout notice had also been issued against him. Why is Sona Pappu Currently Absconding?

Kolkata's high-profile 'Sona Pappu case' involves allegations of land grabbing, extortion, illegal construction, and the operation of an organized crime syndicate. In connection with this case, Shantanu Sinha Ghosh—a DCP with the Kolkata Police—has now been arrested. Sona Pappu, alias Biswajit Poddar, is reported to be a resident of the Ballygunge area in South Kolkata. He is currently absconding.

What About Cases Involving Extortion and Illegal Construction?

According to the ED, the prime accused, Biswajit Poddar (alias Sona Pappu), faces charges of amassing assets worth crores of rupees through land grabbing, extortion, and illegal construction activities. Businessman Jay S. Kamdar has also been arrested in connection with this same case.

Was 'Sona Pappu' Illegally Amassing Funds?

Biswajit Poddar (alias Sona Pappu) and his associates have been implicated in various criminal cases, including rioting, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and violations of the Arms Act. According to the investigative agency, the accused was illegally amassing substantial sums of money by running an organized crime syndicate within West Bengal. Sona Pappu is specifically accused of generating wealth through illegal extortion, land grabbing in the real estate sector, and unauthorized construction activities.

What has 'Sona Pappu' Has Not Yet Appeared Before the Investigative Agency?

The ED stated that summonses had been issued to Sona Pappu, directing him to join the investigation; however, he has so far failed to appear before the agency. He is also a wanted fugitive by the police in connection with the violence incident that occurred on Kankulia Road, near Golpark in Kolkata.

What About ED Raids in April 2026?

The ED suspected that DCP Shantanu Sinha Biswas might have financial and other links with Sona Pappu and certain members of his criminal network. Acting on this suspicion, the ED conducted a raid at his residence in Kolkata in April 2026. Meanwhile, the DCP has finally been arrested in connection with this case.
