Kolkata: With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) coming to power after winning the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, problems continue to mount for Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee. On Monday, heavy police force was deployed at the Kolkata residence of the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
This police action at the 188A Harish Mukherjee Road residence of Abhishek Banerjee commenced immediately upon the expiration of the deadline stipulated in a notice regarding illegal construction issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, a development that has sent ripples through political circles of West Bengal. It is reported that this police intervention follows a notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). The civic body had served a seven-day notice to Abhishek Banerjee regarding alleged illegal construction in several parts of his residence. This deadline expired on Monday, following which the police arrived at the scene. However, police officials have not yet issued any official statement regarding this action.
Reports suggest that the notice issued by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation alleged that certain sections of Abhishek Banerjee's bungalow had been constructed without the necessary permissions. According to municipal regulations, if illegal construction is not dismantled even after the expiration of the notice period, administrative action may be initiated.
On the other hand, the sudden police presence at Abhishek Banerjee's residence has sparked outrage among TMC workers. The workers have termed this action an act of political vendetta. It is worth noting that this incident has occurred at a time when the political temperature in West Bengal is already running high. A war of words continues between the ruling BJP and the main opposition, the TMC, with the cycle of mutual allegations and counter-allegations showing no signs of abating.
