West Bengal: PM Modi to announce schemes, Mamata hits back with Anganwadi salary hike

The monthly remuneration of Anganwadi workers increased by Rs 750 which will be implemented from April 1, 2024.

Trinamool Congress supremo and the chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday announced the hike of remuneration of Anganwadi workers and Asha workers by Rs 750. Notably, the announcement just ahead of Lok Sabha Elections 2024, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The announcement by the chief minister will come into effect from next month, which will increase the monthly remuneration of Anganwadi workers by Rs 750 which was Rs 8,250 and will now be Rs 9,000. The hike will be implemented from April 1, 2024.

Apart from this, a hike of Rs 500 per month for Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) workers has also been announced. 

Before West Bengal government, the Odisha government raised the remuneration for Anganwadi and mini-Anganwadi workers from Rs 7,500 to Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,375 to Rs 7,250, respectively. 

Similarly, the Kerala Government, in the month of January announced a wage hike for over 60,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers in the State with an increment of up to Rs 1,000.

The hike in salaries of the Anganwadi workers in Bengal comes on the day Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the state to inaugurate several developmental projects. Among which, India's first underwater metro services, an engineering marvel in itself has been inaugurated. The underwater metro will cover the distance of 520m in just 45 seconds.
