Kolkata: Trinamool leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee sustained injuries during a protest and violent altercation that took place in Sonarpur. Upon returning from the site, he was initially taken to a private hospital located on the EM Bypass in Kolkata, but was subsequently transferred to a different hospital situated in Minto Park.

Trinamool leader and former minister Sovan Chatterjee, who was accompanying Abhishek, stated that he has sustained injuries to several parts of his body—including his head—and has also complained of nausea. He added that the actual severity of the injuries would become clear only after a medical examination.

Meanwhile, Trinamool chief and former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed directly from her residence in Kalighat to the hospital. She was accompanied by Abhishek's mother, Lata Banerjee. Mamata alleged that Abhishek was not receiving proper medical treatment at the first hospital.

"That is why I have brought him to this second hospital," she stated. However, the hospital management declined to comment on this allegation. The incident has heightened political tensions in the region. Along with other opposition leaders, Aam Aadmi Party chief and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also condemned the violence and raised questions regarding the law-and-order situation in West Bengal.
