Islamabad: Strong earthquake tremors created panic in Pakistan on Saturday morning. In many cities and towns people came out of their homes out of fear. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) and the US Geological Survey (USGS), the intensity of the earthquake was measured at 5.4 on the Richter scale. Its centre was about 63 kilometres away from Barkhan city in Balochistan.

When and where did the earthquake occur?

According to initial information, the epicentre of the earthquake was about 35 kilometres below the ground. However, in some reports its depth is also said to be 10 kilometres. According to Indian time, this shock was felt at around 8:36 in the morning.

What did people do after the earthquake?

As the ground shook, people in many cities ran out of their homes and offices in fear. It is fortunate that initial reports have not revealed any major damage or loss of life or property. The administration is constantly monitoring the situation and information is being collected from the damage-caused areas.

What is happening right now in earthquake areas?

The local administration, disaster department and other officers are together taking stock of the damage. Especially in villages and remote areas, vigil is being maintained. If there is any damage, help can be provided immediately. Teams are on alert.

Why do earthquakes occur frequently in Pakistan?

Geologists say that Pakistan is one of the most dangerous earthquake-prone areas in the world. The reason for this is that this country is situated at the collision point of the Indian Plate and the Eurasian Plate. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the hilly areas of the north lie near several major fault lines. That's why the ground shakes here again and again.

How does an earthquake happen?

There are big plates under the earth. When these plates collide, slide or there is too much pressure on them, energy is suddenly released. This energy spreads in the form of waves, and the earth starts trembling. Apart from this, small earthquakes also occur due to human activities like volcanic eruptions and big mining or blasts. The strength of an earthquake is measured on the Richter scale. An earthquake of high intensity can cause great destruction to life and property.
