Chaos in Pakistan After Emergency Rule, Bloody Clashes Break Out in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Facebook)
Islamabad: Political tension has increased after the implementation of the governor's rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Violent clashes broke out at several places on Tuesday between supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the police. There are reports of several people being injured during the demonstration. At the same time, the case of alleged disappearance of former Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is also in discussion. His brother Mohammad Aamir has filed a petition in Peshawar High Court demanding his immediate recovery.
The political atmosphere in the province has heated up after the Pakistan government's decision to impose Governor's rule. PTI supporters are protesting against the government's move. The party alleges that the police lathicharged, released tear gas shells and even opened fire on the peaceful protesting workers. The party has called it a violation of civil rights.
The most serious clashes took place in Bara area, about 15 kilometers from Peshawar, where at least five people were reported injured. However, the administration has raised questions on the allegations related to police firing and said that some videos circulated on social media were created by AI.
PTI leaders have termed the police action as atrocities. On the other hand, Provincial Administration Information Officer Samar Haroon Biloar has rejected the allegations of police firing and raised questions on the authenticity of the video circulated on social media.
Information has also been given about the arrest of 50 PTI supporters on charges of damaging government property during the demonstration. There is tension in Pakistan due to political opposition, security concerns and action against leaders. The conflict between the central and provincial leadership is likely to increase in the coming days.
Amid political tension, the case of alleged disappearance of former Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has also come to light. His brother Mohammad Aamir filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court alleging that masked and armed men allegedly abducted Sohail Afridi in the presence of police officers.
The petition states that despite three days having passed, he has not been produced in the court. This has increased concerns about their safety. However, the allegations made in this case have not been independently confirmed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif defended the decision to impose Governor's rule during a meeting with allies. He alleged that the government has not proved effective in dealing with terrorism and extremism in the province.
Shehbaz Sharif also accused PTI of colluding with banned organisation Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He said that the central government has formed an 11-member committee under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar to keep an eye on the security and administrative system of the province.
