‘Trump Saved Us’: Shehbaz Sharif Brings Up Operation Sindoor, Praises US At UNGA

New York: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday. In his nearly 23-minute speech, he referred to the India-Pakistan military conflict of 2025 and thanked US President Donald Trump for his alleged role in reducing tensions. Sharif once again raised the issue of Kashmir and also targeted India over the Indus Water Treaty. 

Why was Trump given credit for stopping the conflict?

Shehbaz Sharif said Trump's "timely intervention" during 2025 amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan helped prevent the situation from worsening. Praising the leadership of the US President, he claimed that this prevented large-scale loss of life and property in South Asia. 

However, India has consistently rejected the claim of any third party mediation in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Both countries have made different claims regarding the 2025 conflict and the developments thereafter.

Was Operation Sindoor also mentioned?

Sharif presented Pakistan's side to the United Nations with reference to the military conflict of 2025. The conflict escalated after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, 2025, in which 26 civilians were killed. India launched Operation Sindoor on 7 May 2025.

In his speech, the Pakistani Prime Minister presented this entire incident from Pakistan's perspective. India does not accept these claims of Pakistan.

What did Shahbaz say about Kashmir?

Shehbaz Sharif said a "just and fair resolution" of the Kashmir issue is necessary to prevent South Asia from slipping into a 2025-like situation in the future. He also mentioned the role of the United Nations. 

India's stand is different on this issue. New Delhi describes Jammu and Kashmir as an integral and inseparable part of India and rejects Pakistan's claims.

What did Pakistani PM say on Indus Water Treaty?

Sharif also warned India regarding the Indus Water Treaty. He said Pakistan would view any attempt to stop, disrupt or divert water from its share as an "act of war". 

India had decided to put the Indus Water Treaty on hold after the Pahalgam attack. New Delhi says that this decision will remain in force until action is taken on the issue of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan has been opposing this step of India.

Were talks between America and Iran also mentioned?

Shahbaz Sharif also mentioned the situation in West Asia and US-Iran tension in his speech. He claimed that Pakistan made diplomatic efforts to take forward talks between the two countries and provided a platform for talks in Islamabad. 

Was Asim Munir's name also taken many times?

The Pakistani Prime Minister also mentioned Field Marshal Asim Munir several times in his speech. Sharif claimed that Munir's efforts were instrumental in paving the way for diplomacy in difficult circumstances. 

After Shehbaz Sharif's speech, India responded to Pakistan's claims under 'Right to Reply' in the United Nations. In this reply, the Indian side presented its stand on many issues including terrorism, internal situation of Pakistan and Kashmir.
