New Delhi: Six Indian seafarers have been stranded at the Karachi Port in Pakistan for nearly seven months. It is reported that the ship has been held up due to a dispute between an Iranian shipping company and Karachi Port officials. Among them is Vineet Kishore Mishra, a resident of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, who serves as the ship's chief officer. His family says the ship has been held up at the Karachi Port since April 17, 2026. The six Indians have been stranded there ever since.
According to the family, there is no electricity on the ship and the mobile network is also down, making it very difficult to contact those on board. The family also alleges that the passports and seabooks of the six Indians have been taken away. Vineet's service period has also ended, but he is not being allowed to disembark and return to India.
Vineet has been working in the Merchant Navy for nearly 10 years. According to his family, he joined an Iranian company on February 25, 2026. He then departed Oman on the company's ship. On April 17, the ship arrived at Karachi Port. A dispute arose between the company and port officials, leading to the ship's detention. The family alleges that the ship's power was subsequently cut off and the passports of the Indian crew were confiscated.
Vineet's wife, Neha Mishra, and father, Lalit Kishore Mishra, are constantly trying to secure his safe return. His father is a retired army officer. Vineet's two young children are also waiting for their father to return home. The family says that due to poor network connectivity, they are unable to speak to Vineet daily. Sometimes, they only speak for a few minutes on the phone. This leaves the family worried about his safety and well-being.
Vineet's wife and family have contacted the Indian diplomatic mission in Pakistan, seeking assistance in bringing the six Indians back safely. According to the family, they received assurances of assistance after writing to the Indian Embassy, but no solution has been found so far.
The family has appealed to the Prime Minister, the President, and the Ministry of External Affairs for immediate intervention. They have also sought help from their local MLA and MP. The family questions why six Indians are facing hardship due to a dispute between the company and port officials. When will they be allowed to return to India?
