New Delhi: Preparations for the Indian cricket team for the 2026 Asian Games have begun. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has submitted a provisional list of 30 players to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for the Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, in September and October. The most significant talking points regarding this list are the inclusion of young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi and the exclusion of the current T20 captain, Suryakumar Yadav.
The 15-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi grabbed everyone's attention with his explosive batting in the 2026 IPL and has now been included in the provisional squad for the Asian Games for the very first time. On the other hand, the names of Suryakumar Yadav and the Test and ODI captain, Shubman Gill, do not appear on this list.
In fact, India's tour of the West Indies and the cricket tournament at the Asian Games are scheduled to take place almost simultaneously. A series comprising three ODIs and five T20s is scheduled between India and the West Indies from September 27 to October 17, while the men's cricket tournament at the Asian Games will run from September 24 to October 3. Consequently, the selectors have had to plan for two distinct T20 squads.
Given the likelihood of Shubman Gill assuming the captaincy of the ODI squad, he was not included in the Asian Games list. Meanwhile, officials told the media that Suryakumar Yadav is no longer considered part of the long-term plans for the 2028 Olympics and the next T20 World Cup; therefore, his name was also omitted from the list of probable players.
The leading contenders for the captaincy of the Asian Games squad include Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma. Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah's name does appear on the list; however, keeping the preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, his priority at that time may well be ODI cricket. Harshit Rana has also been included among the probable players, with the hope that he will regain his fitness in time.
In the spin department, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Harsh Dubey have secured spots. However, it is likely that only two of these players will make it into the final Asian Games squad, while the remaining players may feature in the series against the West Indies. Interestingly, despite his recent performance being somewhat lackluster, Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad—who led India to a gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games—also features in this list.
The provisional list of 30 players submitted by the BCCI to the IOA includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy, Anukul Roy, Ayush Badoni, Harsh Dubey, Dhruv Jurel, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravi Bishnoi, Shahbaz Ahmed, Shivam Dube, Vipraj Nigam, Harshit Rana, Yash Thakur, and Washington Sundar.
