New Delhi: Controversy over umpiring has once again erupted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have expressed strong displeasure over the controversial manner in which Finn Allen was dismissed during their match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). This entire incident pertains to the match played at Eden Gardens on April 9 (Thursday).

Why did the umpiring controversy erupt?

In that match, Kolkata Knight Riders opener Finn Allen played a shot towards the third-man area off a delivery from Prince Yadav in the second over. Digvesh Singh Rathore, stationed near the boundary, took the catch; however, replays appeared to show his foot touching the boundary rope. Despite this, Third Umpire KN Ananthapadmanabhan ruled Allen "caught out," thereby sparking a controversy.

Following the match, frustration regarding this decision was clearly evident within the KKR camp. Team player Rovman Powell questioned the umpiring standards, remarking that in the IPL, third umpires typically conduct lengthy reviews even for incidents of lesser significance. He stated that this decision disrupted the team's momentum, though he also acknowledged that the blame for the defeat could not be placed solely on this incident.

Rovman Powell remarked, "We have witnessed lengthy reviews in the IPL for incidents far less significant than this one. This was a very close call, yet it was not scrutinized with the necessary precision." According to the Laws of Cricket, if any part of a fielder's body touches the boundary while taking a catch, the catch is deemed invalid.

Is this the first controversy of  IPL 2026?

This is not the first instance of a controversy over a boundary catch in the IPL 2026 season. Earlier, the catch of Heinrich Klaasen taken by Phil Salt had also come under scrutiny. A succession of such decisions has made it abundantly clear that a lack of consistency in umpiring is fast becoming a major issue.

Finn Allen's early dismissal proved to be a significant blow for the Kolkata Knight Riders. This dealt a severe blow to the Kolkata Knight Riders' hopes of an aggressive start, mounting pressure on their batting lineup. In such high-voltage matches, even a single decision can turn the tide of the game—and that is precisely what unfolded in this contest.
