New Delhi: The Indian Men’s Hockey Team delivered a commanding performance, defeating Korea 4-1 in the semi-final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy 2024. The match, held at the picturesque Moqi Hockey Training Base in China Daur Ethnic Park, Hulunbuir on Monday, saw India advance to the final with a stellar display of skill and teamwork.

India started the semi-final with aggressive intent, putting Korea under immediate pressure. Abhishek was quick to test Korean goalkeeper Jaehan Kim with a powerful reverse shot in the opening minutes. Uttam Singh then set the tone for the match with a decisive goal in the 13th minute. His effort came from a dynamic run down the right wing, leading to a crucial tap-in after Araijeet Singh’s cross.

Extending the lead

The second quarter saw India solidify their advantage. They earned their first penalty corner early on, and Harmanpreet Singh capitalized on the opportunity by striking the backboard in the 19th minute, pushing India’s lead to 2-0. Korea attempted to counter by maintaining possession and probing for gaps, but India’s defense remained robust, denying Korea’s offensive efforts.

As the quarter progressed, Korea managed to put some pressure on India, with Yoonho Kong testing goalkeeper Suraj Karkera. Despite Korea’s increased efforts, India continued to threaten with circle entries and sustained pressure. Jarmanpreet Singh further extended India’s lead in the 32nd minute with a deftly executed aerial pass from Sumit, making the score 3-0.

Korea’s brief resurgence

Korea managed to pull one back in the 33rd minute when Jihun Yang converted a penalty corner, reducing the deficit to 3-1. However, India’s dominance was evident as they continued to create scoring opportunities. A crucial moment came just before the end of the third quarter when Korea’s goalkeeper Jaehan Kim made a critical error, gifting India a penalty corner. Harmanpreet Singh took full advantage, sending a powerful shot past the new goalkeeper Daewon Oh to secure a 4-1 lead.

Final quarter and match conclusion

In the final quarter, India maintained control of the game. Abhishek and Araijeet Singh tested the Korean defense with several attempts, while Korea earned a penalty corner with eight minutes remaining. Hyeonhong Kim’s attempt missed the target, and India managed to hold their ground. The Indian team’s disciplined performance ensured a 4-1 victory and a place in the final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy.
