Glasgow: It was a good start for India on the second day of Commonwealth Games 2026. Para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar opened India's account in Glasgow and won the bronze medal. Apart from this, Indian players also performed well in boxing, swimming and lawn bowls. Medals were lost in some competitions, but many players are keeping their medal hopes alive by reaching the next round.
India got its first success in para powerlifting. In the men's heavyweight category, Jhandu Kumar performed brilliantly and won the bronze medal. He successfully lifted the weight of 181 kg and 190 kg. However, his last attempt of 196 kg could not be achieved. In this event, Idris Riluwan of Nigeria won gold and Matthew Harding of England won silver. India's second player Sudhir finished sixth.
In men's lightweight para powerlifting, Ashok Malik had a brilliant fight, but he finished fourth and missed the medal by a narrow margin. Whereas Paramjeet Kumar remained at seventh place.
India did not get a medal in swimming, but many players impressed. Karthik Budigina finished fourth in the men's 100m freestyle S13 event. He remained very close to the bronze medal. His companion Imam Ali finished seventh.
Star swimmer Srihari Nataraj could not repeat his best performance in the semi-finals of 50 meter backstroke and missed a place in the final.
Indian boxer Jadumni Singh made a great start to her campaign. In the men's 55 kg category, he defeated Scotland's Aaron Cullen in a one-sided match and made it to the pre-quarterfinals. Now his next challenge will be Sumama Rehman of Pakistan.
Indian players continued to perform well in lawn bowls. In women's pairs, the pair of Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinky Singh registered their second consecutive win by defeating South Africa.
In men's singles, Putul Sonowal made a brilliant comeback by defeating Cecil Alexander of Falkland Islands in tie-break and made it to the next round.
By the end of the second day's play, India had won a bronze medal. With this, the Indian team has reached the top-10 of the medal tally. At present, Australia remains at the first position with the highest number of medals.
Many players from India are currently challenging in different events. In such a situation, more medals are being expected from the Indian team in the coming days.
