Devdutt Padikkal Creates History With Maiden Test Century; Joins Rahul Dravid, Pujara in Sri Lanka Record List (X)
New Delhi: Devdutt Padikkal registered his first Test hundred in India's first inning on the first day of the first Test at Galle International Stadium against Sri Lanka. The left-hander did not fade on the second day and kept his good form going, to collect a further 150 runs. Padikkal was hitting at No. 3 and is one of the just three Indians to hit over 150 runs in that position against Sri Lanka. Later, he dropped to 167 runs to fall short of a double century. He scored 15 fours and one six in his innings.
Padikkal accumulated 150 runs in 215 balls. His total run tally was achieved by way of hitting a four off the final ball of the 86th over. He thus became one of the select few Indian batsmen to score 150+ runs batting at No. 3 in ODIs against Sri Lanka.
The two batters from this list are Dravid who scored 177 runs in Ahmedabad in 2009 and Pujara who scored 153 runs in Galle in 2017.
Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara had earlier put on over 150 runs for Sri Lanka at No.3. Dravid made 177 runs in Ahmedabad in 2009. Pujara had 153 runs in Galle in 2017.
Padikkal was out with 167 runs off 230 balls. He hit 15 fours and one six in his innings. His knock was instrumental in India's build-up in the first Test. Padikkal missed an opportunity for a double century, as well.
After scoring 167 runs, Prabath Jayasuriya was replaced by Padikkal. Jayasuriya was bowling with the second new ball when he noticed that Padikkal was coming out of his crease. Bowled quickly and flat, close to the off stump.
Padikkal was out of his crease, and missed the ball. The Sri Lanka wicketkeeper picked up the ball and removed the bails in a flash.
Padikkal was bowled and India lost an impact performance. The Galle fans too cheered the Indian batsman as he walked back to the Indian dressing room.
