New Delhi: The Indian team management has already intensified its preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Most of the focus is on creating options in the middle order. According to the report, Tilak Verma's name is being considered as the backup of Shreyas Iyer. The team management wants to prepare an option who can replace Iyer if needed without much change in the batting order. 

Why was there a need for backup for Shreyas Iyer?

Shreyas Iyer plays an important role in the middle order of the ODI team. In such a situation, in his absence, it has become the priority of the team to prepare alternatives without disturbing the batting order much. The team management believes that in a big tournament like the World Cup, relying only on first-choice players can be risky. 

Why did Tilak Verma come into discussion?

The biggest aspect in Tilak Verma's favour is that he is a left-handed batsman. The number of right-handed batsmen in the Indian batting order is high, in such a situation Tilak can give left-right hand balance to the team. The team management has been giving importance to this combination in batting earlier also. Apart from this, Tilak is also being encouraged to work on his off-spin. If he is able to bowl a few overs regularly then he can become an additional option for the team in ODIs. 

Can team get additional options in bowling also?

Having a batsman in the top and middle order of Team India who can bowl a few overs when needed is important for the management. Amid concerns about the fitness of Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy, the team needs a player who can contribute with batting as well as bowling.

Will the real preparations start from the New Zealand tour?

Preparations for the 2027 World Cup are expected to gain momentum from the New Zealand tour to be held in October. India has to play five ODI matches there. This series is being considered an important opportunity to test new options for team management. However, the picture of the World Cup is not expected to be completely clear from the ODI series against West Indies to be held in September. Many key players will not be available for that tour, so there will be more scope for experimentation with stronger players in the New Zealand series.

Right now it cannot be said that Tilak Verma has confirmed his place in the World Cup team. According to the report, he is included in the possible backup options. The selectors are also keeping an eye on other players to add depth to the middle order.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are in the final stages of their careers, while KL Rahul will also be over 35 years of age at that time.
